- MEG: Monster Encounter Generator 2.0

- This program generates monster encounters for use with AD&Dv1.
- The general idea is that you type the name of a monster, and
- it responds with various randomized information, saving the
- DM a lot of dice-rolling.

- Unlike the previous version of the program (released back in
- September), this version is available in an executable format
- so that the user does not need GW-Basic to run it. Other
- improvements have also been made, such as scaling down the
- overall output bulk as well as providing an internal mechanism
- for saving the output to a user-chosen text file.

- All comments are welcome. If you need help getting it set-up,
- just send me email, and I'll help if I can.

- A few special notes:

- Obviously, this program is far from professional. For those of you
- looking for something better, I might suggest SSI's first DM's
- Assistant program, which I heard was decent, though it's been off
- the shelves and out of print for many years (no, don't ask me for a
- copy). Last I heard, however, SSI had an account on Compuserve which
- you can reach by emailing 76711.250@compuserve.com

- Also (and pay attention to this), MEG and programs like it have
- always had, in my mind at least, one common failing. They promote
- roll-playing as opposed to role-playing, the former being a very
- easy rut to fall into. If you decide to use MEG or any of its kin,
- please remember, never let a monster do the work of an evil genius.

- Now here's a short discription of the files you've just untar'ed.

- meg.zip: This is the file you want to download to your IBM.
- It contains, MEG.EXE (the program in machine language,
- directly executable from DOS), MEG.BAS (the GW-Basic
- version of the program, so you can modify it to your
- liking if you have either GW-Basic or QuickBasic),
- and MONSTERS.MEG (the ascii database of MEG's
- known monsters).

- example: This is an example output so you can see basically
- what MEG does.

- monst.ps: This is a one-page PostScript document containing a
- list of all the monsters currently in MEG's monster
- file (over 200 monsters, most taken from the monster
- manuals and the folio). Although you can get this
- same list from the program itself, I've found a
- printed version to come in handy. Note that the
- monster file has not been modified since the previous
- version of MEG was released, though the name of this
- file has changed (MEG no longer searches for mfile.a).
- Also note that you can easily add your own monsters to
- this file via any ascii/text editor.
